Thanksgiving Holiday

With Thanksgiving around the corner most of us are thinking about upcoming plans with family, friends, food and holiday travel – and of everything we need to get done.  While the Thanksgiving holiday might bring to mind Norman Rockwell pictures of holiday feasts and families gathering to celebrate, we should be reminded that it is also one of the most dangerous holidays for people to be traveling on the road. There are many more traffic fatalities over Thanksgiving than Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The reason is simple – this holiday is one of the busiest for the number of people who travel. The number of injuries and fatalities related to driving over Thanksgiving (Wednesday through Sunday) is much too high. Perhaps we can all stay a bit safer by keeping some important statistics in mind:

Thanksgiving Travel Statistics

  • There will be over 48 million road travelers heading to Thanksgiving festivities this year, an increase of over 2 million from 2017.
  • For over a decade, there have been over 400 traffic fatalities each year in the USA during the Thanksgiving travel period from Wednesday to Sunday.
  • During the same Thanksgiving travel period, there were over 40,000 road travel injuries each year that required medical attention.
  • Mornings are the safest time for holiday travel; there are 2x the fatalities in the afternoon/evening than in the morning.
  • 58% of fatalities involving drunk drivers happen between 8pm and 4am.
  • For New York City, the time with the most Thanksgiving travel accidents: Tuesday 6-8pm.

STOP-DWI New York

A state-wide effort called ‘STOP-DWI New York’ will be implemented over the Thanksgiving holiday for our state.
Law enforcement is expected to crack down on drunk and impaired drivers during the period between Nov. 27 and Dec. 1 (Wed.-Sun.).
Research has shown that such a crackdown can reduce traffic deaths by 20%.
That means that many lives will be saved because of the ‘STOP-DWI New York’ campaign.
The New York State Police and local law enforcement will take part in the campaign, which will include sobriety checkpoints.
