Kobe Bryant Helicopter Accident

kobe bryant

The recent news of Kobe Bryant’s death in a helicopter accident has touched  many of us. Kobe, along with his daughter and seven others were killed when the helicopter they were riding in crashed during patchy heavy fog. They were apparently on their way to Kobe’s daughter Gianna’s basketball game.
Many of us marveled at Kobe Bryant’s playing ability, and as a nation we all mourn his death, his daughter’s death and the death of the other seven people with him.
We can only speculate at this point why the pilot decided to fly in fog. Many helicopters were grounded because of the weather that day. Perhaps the sky had cleared momentarily at the point, but we will have to wait for more answers.

This horrific incident reminds us all of the dangers that life can bring, especially when we don’t expect it. We all hear about the occasional helicopter accident, and we know there are inherent dangers. Still, we trust the pilot and the helicopter company to make rational and safe decisions on our behalf.

Helicopter Crash Statistics – Helicopter Accidents on the Rise

Fatal helicopter accidents have been on the rise over the last three years and authorities have yet to determine why
In 2016 helicopter accidents were 0.54 per 100,000 flight hours
In 2018 helicopter accidents were 0.72 per 100,000 flight hours
Loss of control accounted for 18% of accidents
Inadvertent encounters accounted for 17% of accidents
Elective low altitude operation accounted for 15% of accidents
Other causes accounted for 50% of accidents

Conversely, the FAA reports that during the three years prior to 2016, the helicopter accident rate had fallen. It is unclear what factors have caused this recent increase in helicopter accidents.
