Brooklyn Sidewalk Accidents
Brooklyn and NYC sidewalks can be dangerous for pedestrians. One moment you are minding your own business, walking to your destination, maybe thinking of tasks you need to complete, a conversation or what to have for dinner. The last thing on your mind is the peril that you could be in from an out of control or speeding vehicle. Pedestrians have no shield to protect them from this sort of situation.
Recently on the Brooklyn streets, 2 people were hit by an uncontrolled truck as it plowed into a restaurant, hit a van, and also ended up striking them. The people suffered serious injuries but thankfully, there were no fatalities.
In another accident in New Jersey, a hit and run driver in Hoboken fled the scene of an accident by intentionally driving on the sidewalk to escape and ended up striking a man. The pedestrian in this case also survived, but with injuries.
In Chinatown recently, a sidewalk accident resulted in a death when a car jumped the curb and struck a man as he walked down Canal St.
Besides pedestrian accidents involving out of control cars, trucks and other vehicles, the fact is, you can be injured in any number of ways while minding your own business while walking down the sidewalk:
- Slip and Fall Injuries
- Debris on sidewalks
- Snow or ice covered walkways
- Uneven and cracking sidewalks
- Concrete spalling
- Inferior sidewalk construction
Pedestrian Safety Statistics
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that almost 6,000 pedestrians were killed in traffic related incidents in one year (2016) in the USA. Essentially, this stat translates to one pedestrian death every hour and a half.
That fatality stat is bad enough, but many more pedestrians were injured in a one year period including close to 129,000 pedestrians who were treated for both major and minor injuries from traffic related crashes and accidents. Sobering statistics to be sure.
The sidewalk accident lawyers at The Law Offices of David J. Hernandez & Associates have seen more than their fair share of the results of pedestrians being hurt on our Brooklyn and NYC sidewalks. Although property owners may be held liable for the poor condition of their sidewalk, you only have a short time frame in which to file a claim against them.
