Amusement Park Accidents

new jersey - amusement park ferris wheel

There have been a spate of amusement park related accidents in the news this summer, some resulting in serious injuries and deaths. In India two people were killed when the ride they were on snapped in two. In Vancouver the failure of a part caused oil to be poured over the riders as they rode a thrill ride at a popular amusement park there. The world’s tallest waterslide (169 ft. high) located in Kansas City has been the location of a recent death when a raft containing a 10 year old boy became airborne and crashed into a pole, killing him. An 11 year old girl received a serious brain injury when she passed out on a ride and was unable to hold on to the bar to keep her body steady. This caused her head to whip back and forth, causing the injury. The accident happened at a festival, and not at a permanent amusement park. In Chicago a carnival ride resulted in injury when two rides collided.

Brooklyn and NYC has several amusement parks as well as many carnivals and festivals. Because of the nature of amusement rides, there are bound to be accidents. Mobile rides (such as at festivals and carnivals) are sanctioned and inspected by the federal government, permanent rides (such as at amusement parks) are not.
