Community Involvement

David J. Hernandez was admitted to the practice of law in the State of New York in May 1987 and the State of New Jersey in November 1988. He is also admitted in the Eastern, Southern and Western District Courts of the State of New York; the Federal District Court of the State of New Jersey and the United States Supreme Court.

In 1990, he opened his own general practice, representing financial institutions, small businesses, and individual clients, including members of Local 6, Postal Workers and members of many other unions and organizations in various areas of the law.

Mr. Hernandez is a former President of the Puerto Rican Bar Association, Inc. and the Puerto Rican Scholarship Fund, Inc. during the celebration of the Association’s 50th Anniversary. Mr. Hernandez, a member of the Puerto Rican Bar Association for over 20 years has served on the By-Laws Committee, the Fund Raising Committee, the Scholarship and Gala Committee, and the Membership Committee.

In 2004, the outgoing president, Edgar DeLeon, Esq. arranged for the Puerto Rican Bar Association to march in the Puerto Rican Day Parade for the first time in over 10 years. Upon learning this Mr. Hernandez invited the association to march with the float which he has cosponsored for over twelve years. 2007 also marked the 50th Anniversary of the Puerto Rican Day Parade. The Puerto Rican Bar Association was honored at the Parade breakfast as a result of a year long partnership between the two organizations.

During his tenure, as 50th President of the Puerto Rican Bar Association and Scholarship Fund, many new initiatives and milestones were achieved. One notable accomplishment was that twelve scholarship recipients were awarded an unprecedented $50,000.00 in funds, grants, loan forgiveness and/or 50% bar review discounts. This was as a result of tireless fundraising efforts resulting in almost $250,000.00 raised during Mr. Hernandez’s tenure as president.

Additionally, David J. Hernandez has obtained two grants to fund the legal referral and information service for the Puerto Rican Bar Association, Inc.

Mr. Hernandez has also served/serves on the 2007 Judicial Screening Committee for the Democratic Party; Andrew Cuomo, Attorney General Transition Team 2006 – 2007; New York State Bar Association; Executive Council of the NYS Conference of Bar Leaders; American Prepaid Institute of the American Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association Special Committee on Civil Rights.

During his 20 years as a general practitioner, Mr. Hernandez has continued to assist members of the community by providing services to the economically disadvantaged, through referrals from various legal affiliations, including the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Puerto Rican Bar Association, the Brooklyn Bar Association, the Hispanic National Bar Association and many other organizations.

He has been a member of the Latino Civic Association of Staten Island (L.C.A.) from 1995 to 2003, and was appointed General Counsel. Mr. Hernandez was actively steering the Association toward achieving its goal of providing programs, services, and lectures to assist in the empowerment of more than 40,000 Latino residents of Staten Island.

As L.C.A. Committee Chairperson for Economic Development, Mr. Hernandez played an instrumental role in creating a survey to ascertain the economic needs of the Latino Community, on a business and personal level, in areas such as banking investments, real estate, mortgages, and computer technology. Subsequently, he participated in fostering a partnership with the Richmond County Savings Bank, the West Brighton Business Outreach Center and Dr. Ron Shepard of The College of Staten Island, to provide a free, public, seven week seminar on How to Start Your Own Business, and he has been a speaker on local access cable television program entitled “Latino Civic Association Presents…” (1998-2000).

As a Committee Member of Boy Scout Troop 26 at the Castleton Hill Moravian Church, Mr. Hernandez served as the Troop as Merit Badge Counselor for Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, and Citizenship in the World. Mr. Hernandez also served his community as a member of the Parish Counsel for the Blessed Sacrament Parish of Staten Island; community role model for P.S. 18’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration in Staten Island; the Cub Scouts in Brooklyn, and Principal for a Day at Our Lady of Sorrows Elementary School in the Lower East Side. Mr. Hernandez currently sponsors, The Cubs, in the Wolves little league division in Brooklyn.

Mr. Hernandez earned his Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from Fordham University and his Juris Doctorate from New York University School of Law.
